Gaz Métro is a partner of La route verte

May 4, 2007 - Press releases

Montreal, May 4, 2007 - Gaz Métro is proud to be associated with the official inauguration of the Route verte. Just like Gaz Métro’s natural gas distribution system, this vast bikeway links numerous regions and passes through hundreds of municipalities from one end of Québec to the other. Besides making trips between municipalities easier, the bikeway will help introduce new enthusiasts to the benefits and pleasures of using a bicycle as a means of transportation.

"The Route verte epitomizes what Gaz Métro advocates: besides linking various communities, this superb project encourages sustainable transportation and, ipso facto, a reduction in greenhouse gas. We salute the initiative shown by those behind the project", said Jean Simard, Vice-President, Sustainable Development, Public and Governmental Affairs.

Gaz Métro has been looking to improve its performance and that of its employees as regards sustainable transportation for some years. Several initiatives have been undertaken, aimed not only at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to the activities of its fleet of cars and trucks, but also at reducing those due to its employees driving alone.

Among those initiatives :

  • Gaz Métro launched the Wô les moteurs campaign in 2003 to encourage employees not to leave their car engine idling unnecessarily.
  • Gaz Métro has also taken part in the Allégo program since 2005, in collaboration with Voyagez Futé.
  • In collaboration, with Vélo Québec, every year Gaz Métro participates in the Opération Vélo-boulot with the aim of encouraging its employees to bike to work.
  • More recently, the company adopted a car purchase policy for executives that encourages purchasing a car that is more environment-friendly.

These few examples demonstrate the company’s desire to limit the impacts of its activities on the environment, as well as its concern for the judicious use of resources. For further information on this project, visit the Website at
