About CNG

CNG has exactly the same properties as natural gas in its gaseous state. However, it can be stored at 300 times atmospheric pressure, which reduces the volume by an equal amount. Transported in high pressure tanks, it is the ideal choice for short-range daily trips.

Supply dynamics

To fuel vehicles with CNG, the natural gas from Gaz Métro’s gas network is first compressed to occupy 300 times less space than diesel or gasoline. The CNG is then stored in high pressure tanks at fuelling stations along the Blue Road. There are currently 18 fuelling stations supplying CNG for light, medium and heavy vehicles on short-range daily trips, providing up to 1,000 km of travel per full tank.

The Blue Road, a growing network of stations

Introduced in 2011, the Blue Road is the first public network of compressed and liquefied natural gas refuelling stations for Canada’s transportation industry. Some of the stations are located along the corridor of highways A-20/H-401, between Québec City and Toronto. As deployment of the Blue Road continues, compressed or liquefied natural gas fuelling points will be added in a strategic, flexible manner at various Québec and Ontario locations.

A sensible choice for waste collection

The heavy loads handled by dump trucks and their frequent stops and starts lead to high consumption and low energy efficiency, making them ideal candidates for converting to natural gas. Vehicles that run on natural gas are also up to 10 decibels less noisy and don’t spew out black smoke, which is much appreciated on residential streets. Sani-Estrie, EBI, Vision Enviro Progressive, TTI Environnement and Gaudreau Environnement are just some of the Québec companies that have discovered how natural gas can enhance the efficiency of their vehicle fleet and help improve the environment.

A complementary solution

Where public transit is concerned, vehicle electrification is one alternative to diesel, but this solution isn’t sufficient in some cases, i.e. for transportation over long distances or on winding terrain, where CNG proves more efficient.

Passenger transportation vehicles running on CNG produce less GHG and less noise—two factors that allow for a better experience among primary users: our citizens. CNG is also more economical than diesel, which is a considerable advantage for companies managing vehicles with high fuel consumption, further exacerbated by their frequent stops.

Adapted solutions

To reduce their GHG emissions, road tractors can opt for LNG or CNG. Those with less daily mileage to cover or a lower charge to drag often choose CNG, which is better suited to short-range daily transportation. Several engine models are available to allow freight transportation companies to convert their vehicle fleet to natural gas, thereby saving money and helping improve air quality.
