Accessible, economical natural gas to meet peak electrical needs
The project in brief
Gaz Métro Energy Solutions, a subsidiary of Gaz Métro, is building a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage and regasification site near the TransCanada Energy (TCE) power plant. This will enable electricity to be produced during winter peak demand periods, for the equivalent of approximately 100 hours a year.
A tank with a 20,000 m3 LNG storage capacity along with a regasification unit and related infrastructures will be built on the site of the Société du parc industriel et portuaire de Bécancour.
Transport, storage and regasification
Gaz Métro’s liquefaction, storage and regasification (LSR) plant in east Montréal will produce the LNG that will subsequently be stored in Bécancour. The LNG will be transported from east Montréal to
Bécancour by tanker truck. Prior to being injected into the pipeline connecting the Bécancour storage tank to the power plant, the LNG will be transformed back into its gaseous state in the regasification unit located at the tank's outlet. Worth approximately $75 million, the project will create 10 seasonal and permanent jobs in Bécancour.
Purpose of the project
The project aims to supply the liquefied natural gas (LNG) required to meet Hydro-Québec Distribution's electricity needs during peak demand periods, for the equivalent of approximately 100 hours a year. Hydro-Québec Distribution has filed an application with the Régie de l'énergie. The power plant, which has not produced electricity for a number of years, will be supplied with LNG starting in winter 2018.
Based on a reliable and affordable supply of LNG, the solution will allow the Bécancour TransCanada Energy (TCE) plant to become a strategic tool for meeting the growing electricity needs of Quebecers during very cold spells.
